In 1980 Following a 5-year apprenticeship as a coachbuilder, Martin decided to take up employment with his Father Patrick who was establishing his own haulage business with Downey Transport Services, which covered the carriage of goods throughout Ireland and the Uk, Martin acquired certificates of professional competence in road haulage, after successfully passing examinations set by the Chartered Institute of transport Ireland in 1983, and was employed as driver/ transport manager for the company up until it’s cessation in 1986.
Following this Patrick began a new career in driver training, and established Safeway driving school in 1986, Martin continued with employment in the haulage industry and went on to do long-distance artic work covering many European countries.
Safeway developed very successfully and Patrick semi-retired from the business in 1990, At this time Martin was allowed to take management of the business, after completing a 3 stage examination with the Road Safety Authority, he holds a feta Level 6 grade in driver training, and is member to the Road Safety Authority’s approved driving instructor’s register, he is also member of the institute of advanced motorists, to this day Martin continues to deliver the highest quality in driver training.
